What is an EAN code and where do I find it?
The 18-digit code of your mains connection, explained.
Every electricity connection in the Netherlands has a unique EAN code: an 18-digit number starting with 87. Don't confuse it with your meter number — the EAN code belongs to the connection, not the meter.
Why do we need it?
The NEa registers ERE's per mains connection. Without an EAN code, nothing can be registered or paid out. The code is also stated verbatim in the mandate you sign.
Good news: usually you don't need to do anything
As soon as you enter your address when adding a location, we look up the EAN code automatically in the public EAN register of the Dutch grid operators. Just double-check it and you're done.
Looking it up yourself
If the automatic lookup doesn't succeed, you can find your EAN code here:
- On your energy bill — usually with the connection details or the per-address overview.
- At eancodeboek.nl — enter your postal code and house number.
- In your energy provider's portal — under your contract or connection details.
Note when moving house
The EAN code belongs to the address. If you move, your new address has a different EAN code — report this to us immediately via the portal.
